Osceola Refetoff: Chromatopia |
|||||
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” —Marcel Proust The palms are magenta. The agave burns orange. The sky is a blue so deep it reads as night at noon. Nothing in these photographs has been painted, and very little has been changed after the fact. This is Palm Springs, recorded in light that falls outside human vision. Chromatopia presents surreal images of the Coachella Valley made with a camera sensitive to both the visible and infrared spectra. The color is created in-camera, at the moment of exposure, using a range of archaic filters that control which wavelengths reach the sensor. Living plants reflect infrared strongly. Concrete, stone, and asphalt do not. The result is a world sorted by a rule we never notice: what is alive glows, and what is built stays quiet. Refetoff turns this process on the iconic neighborhoods of Palm Springs. Midcentury modern homes sit low and white beneath towering palms. Manicured gravel yards hold sculpted shrubs and desert succulents. Behind them, the San Jacinto range rises into the frame, a reminder of the wild land the town was carved from. The architecture holds steady. Everything green has become something else. The work speaks in two languages at once. Its saturated color recalls Pop art. Its method comes from the technology of scientific survey, the same infrared imaging used to measure vegetation and water stress from above. That double voice gives the images their charge. They are beautiful, and they are a measurement. Look long enough and the beauty starts to raise questions. Every glowing palm and clipped hedge is drinking. A lawn in the desert is a decision. These photographs are lovely, sparkling, manicured, natural and unnatural, seductive and subversive. Paradisiacal and problematic. Refetoff does not tell us which reading is correct. He shows us the town in a light that makes both readings impossible to ignore. About the ArtistOsceola Refetoff is a Canadian-American-Danish-Bulgarian visual artist working across photography, moving image, sculpture, and installation. He is known for his use of alternative processes, including infrared and pinhole photography, to document human interaction with remote environments. His career runs on parallel tracks in photojournalism, fine art, and cinema. Across all of them, his vision is precise and hyper-realistic, yet the images often arrive feeling surreal, even dreamlike. Refetoff does his transforming at the moment of capture. It is a kind of alchemy. The world in front of the lens goes in unchanged and comes out extraordinary, still entirely real and somehow magical. |
